Off Road area near Grand Junction CO airport (video, 2026)

The Grand Valley OHV Recreation Area (also known as the Grand Valley Open OHV Area) is a designated public motorized recreation area managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

Located at the base of the Little Book Cliffs northeast of Grand Junction, Colorado, it offers open cross-country terrain, barren hills, and trails for off-highway vehicles.

Location & Access

  • Where It Is: Sits northeast of the Grand Junction Regional Airport and I-70, covering roughly 15 square miles of desert terrain bounded by 27 ¼ Road to the west and 32 Road to the east.

  • Main Staging Area: Primary access is off 27 ¼ Road and 29 Road, where riders park, unload, and access the open riding area.

Key Features & Terrain

  • Mancos Shale Hills: The landscape features open, barren hills composed of light-grey Mancos shale. Because vegetation is sparse, it is one of the few designated BLM areas in Colorado that allows open cross-country riding off marked trails.

  • Vehicle Types: Popular for dirt bikes, ATVs, UTVs/side-by-sides, dune buggies, and 4x4 vehicles.

  • Skill Levels: Offers terrain ranging from flat staging areas and gentle tracks for beginners to steep, rutted hill climbs for advanced riders.

Visitor Information

  • Fees: Free access year-round.

  • Amenities: Primitive facilities—staging areas offer parking and unloading space, but riders should bring all their own water and supplies.

  • Dispersed Camping: Allowed within the area, though primitive with no hookups.
