Florissant, Colorado is a quiet, rural mountain community located in western Teller County in central Colorado, about 35 miles west of Colorado Springs along U.S. Highway 24.

Perched at an elevation of roughly 8,200 feet on the northern slopes of Pikes Peak, the area is defined by its dramatic geologic history, open valleys, pine forests, and outdoor recreation.

Key Highlights & Features

  • Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument: Located just south of town, this world-renowned national park protects 34-million-year-old fossil deposits. It is famous for massive petrified redwood stumps (including the 12-foot-wide "Big Stump") and exceptionally preserved fossilized insects and leaves embedded in ancient lakebed shale.

  • Historical Significance: Founded in 1870 along the historic Ute Pass Trail, the area holds deep homesteading history. Visitors can tour the Hornbek Homestead, built in 1878 by pioneer Adeline Hornbek, or visit the Pikes Peak Historical Society Museum in town.

  • Outdoor Recreation:

    • Eleven Mile Canyon & State Park: Located just to the west, offering world-class fly fishing, kayaking, and camping along the South Platte River.

    • Dome Rock State Wildlife Area: A nearby habitat for bighorn sheep featuring dramatic granite rock formations and rugged hiking trails.
